Lab-grown vs natural diamonds: the honest comparison

If you are choosing a diamond in 2026, the question is no longer whether lab-grown is "real" — it is. The question is whether it is right for you, and what you give up (if anything) by choosing one.

The short version
  • Same material. A lab-grown diamond is pure carbon in a cubic crystal — chemically, optically and physically identical to a mined diamond.
  • Big price gap. Lab-grown stones typically run 70–90% less than a comparable natural diamond at retail.
  • Resale is weak for both. Mined and lab-grown diamonds both resell far below retail; buy for love, not investment.
  • The real difference is provenance. No mining means no land disruption and no conflict-financing risk.

Short version: the stone is identical; the economics, the story and the resale market are not. Below is the honest breakdown we give every customer who asks.

What is actually identical

A lab-grown diamond is grown from a carbon seed — either by CVD or HPHT — until it becomes a diamond crystal. It is not cubic zirconia or moissanite. It is diamond, with the same hardness (10/10 on the Mohs scale), the same refractive index and the same fire.

Because of that, independent labs grade both types on the same scale. An IGI-graded lab-grown stone and an IGI-graded mined stone are described with the exact same vocabulary — carat, color, clarity, cut.

What differs in practice

  • Price. The single biggest difference, and the reason most people are here.
  • Provenance. A lab-grown stone has a documented, conflict-free origin by definition.
  • Environmental footprint. Growing a diamond uses far less land and water than mining one.
  • Resale value. This is where the honest answer gets uncomfortable (more below).

Price comparison: a real-world example

Prices move fast, so treat any single number as a snapshot rather than a promise. But the shape of the gap is stable — and it widens as carat size grows.

Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?

Honestly: not like an investment. But neither do most mined diamonds at retail — a mined stone you buy for $12,000 often resells for a fraction of that, because retail prices include margins, marketing and overhead that vanish on the secondary market.

Lab-grown diamonds have an additional headwind: supply keeps growing and prices keep falling, so resale is weaker still. Our advice is the same for both: buy the stone you love, and treat it as jewelry, not an asset.

Can you tell them apart by eye?

No — not with the naked eye, and not with a standard jeweler's loupe. Gemologists need specialized equipment (infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence imaging) to distinguish a lab-grown stone from a mined one.

That is also why certification matters. Every Everlum stone over 0.5 ct ships with an IGI report and a matching laser inscription on the girdle, so its origin is always documented and verifiable.

So which should you choose?

Choose lab-grown if you want the biggest, highest-quality certified stone your budget can buy — and you care about provenance. That is most of our customers.

Choose mined if the specific resale or cultural narrative matters to you, and you are comfortable paying several times more for the same visual result. There is no wrong answer; there is only what you value.

Frequently asked questions

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. They are chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamonds — pure carbon in a cubic crystal, grading 10/10 on the Mohs hardness scale. The only difference is where they formed.

Why are lab-grown diamonds so much cheaper?

Because growing a diamond skips the enormous cost of mining — moving and processing tonnes of rock per carat. The price gap widens each year as growth technology improves.

Will a jeweler know it is lab-grown?

A jeweler can identify it from the certificate and the laser inscription, and a gem lab can confirm it with spectroscopy. It is not distinguishable by eye or with a loupe.

Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?

Like mined diamonds at retail, resale is typically well below the purchase price. Buy for love and design, not as an investment.
