Lab-grown diamond vs moissanite: which should you choose?

Moissanite is a popular diamond alternative, and for good reason: it is durable, affordable and sparkles brightly. But it is not a diamond, and the differences matter once you know what to look for.

The short version
  • Different materials. Diamond is pure carbon; moissanite is silicon carbide. They are not the same stone.
  • Diamond is harder. Diamond scores 10/10 on the Mohs scale, moissanite about 9.25 — both are very durable for everyday wear.
  • Moissanite has more "fire". Some people love the rainbow flashes; others find them a giveaway that it is not a diamond.
  • Diamond costs more. A lab-grown diamond typically costs several times a comparable moissanite — but it is a real diamond with documented resale and broader market acceptance.

Here is the straight comparison, so you can choose with your eyes open.

What each material actually is

A lab-grown diamond is pure carbon crystallized into diamond — identical to a mined diamond, with a certificate to prove it. A moissanite is silicon carbide, a different mineral that happens to be extremely hard and highly refractive.

Moissanite occurs naturally only in tiny quantities (originally found in meteorites); almost all moissanite on the market is lab-created.

Durability and everyday wear

Both are tough enough for an engagement ring worn daily. Diamond is the hardest known natural material at 10/10 on the Mohs scale; moissanite sits around 9.25. In practice, the difference matters mainly for long-term polish and scratching, and both will stand up to decades of normal wear.

Brilliance, fire and the "tell"

This is the visible difference. Moissanite has higher dispersion than diamond, so it throws more rainbow-coloured fire, especially in sunlight and under spotlights. Some people adore it; others feel it reads as "not a diamond".

A diamond's sparkle is often described as brighter, whiter and more balanced — less rainbow, more crisp white flash. In a well-lit showroom the two can look similar; in bright sun, moissanite's extra fire is the giveaway.

Which should you choose?

Choose moissanite if you want a big, bright, budget-friendly ring and you are not attached to the idea of a certified diamond.

Choose a lab-grown diamond if you want a genuine diamond — chemically identical to a mined one, independently certified, and without the price of natural. For most of our customers, that is the point: a real diamond at a price that finally makes sense.

Frequently asked questions

Is moissanite a real diamond?

No. Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different mineral. It is a diamond alternative, not a diamond, and it is not graded on the diamond 4Cs scale.

Is moissanite as durable as a diamond?

It is very durable — about 9.25 on the Mohs scale versus diamond's 10 — and fine for daily wear. Diamond remains the hardest.

Can you tell moissanite from diamond?

Often, yes — moissanite throws more rainbow-coloured fire and typically shows a faint colour tint in some lighting. A gem lab can confirm it easily.

Will moissanite scratch or cloud over time?

Moissanite resists scratching well, but over many years it can lose some polish and may develop a slight surface haze with heavy wear compared to diamond.
