Diamond shapes explained: round, oval, emerald and more

Shape is the most personal choice in a diamond — and one of the most useful levers on price. Round brilliants cost the most; fancy shapes let you buy bigger for less.

The short version
  • Round brilliant is the classic and the most expensive per carat — it also hides inclusions best.
  • Oval, pear and marquise face up larger than a round of the same carat.
  • Emerald and Asscher (step cuts) are elegant but show inclusions more, so buy higher clarity.
  • Fancy shapes generally cost less per carat than a round of the same grade.

Here is a quick tour of the shapes you will see most, what each one says, and how it behaves on the finger.

Round brilliant

The benchmark. Around 58 facets engineered for maximum light return, so it is the most brilliant and forgiving shape — it disguises inclusions better than any other.

It is also the most expensive per carat, because the rough must be cut to a precise round form. If your budget is tight and size matters, other shapes give you more for the money.

Oval

All the brilliance of a round, stretched — which makes an oval face up notably larger than a round of the same carat weight.

Watch the ratio (length-to-width): 1.35–1.50 is the most flattering range. Among all shapes, the oval is probably the best "looks bigger than it is" choice.

Emerald cut

A step cut with long, rectangular facets and cropped corners. It is architectural, understated and unmistakably elegant.

The trade-off: step cuts have fewer facets and a large open table, so inclusions are more visible. If you choose an emerald cut, buy higher clarity (VS or better).

Pear, marquise and heart

Pear (teardrop) combines a round's brilliance with an elongated silhouette and looks beautiful pointing toward the fingertip. Marquise is the most elongated common shape — dramatic and flattering on narrow fingers. Heart is romantic and unmistakable, but the most difficult to cut well.

All three face up large for their weight and usually cost less than a round of the same grade.

Cushion, princess, radiant and asscher

  • Cushion — soft square with rounded corners; vintage feel, excellent brilliance.
  • Princess — sharp square, very brilliant, and often the best value of the popular shapes.
  • Radiant — rectangular with brilliant-style faceting; combines sparkle with a modern silhouette.
  • Asscher — square step cut, a sibling to the emerald cut; elegant but requires high clarity.

Which shape looks biggest?

For a given carat weight, elongated shapes — oval, marquise, pear — spread the weight across a larger surface area, so they appear the biggest. Round and cushion concentrate weight deeper and look smaller.

If size is your priority, an oval is the most efficient way to get it. If you want maximum sparkle and forgiveness, choose round. And if you want to see how it all plays out on real specs, filter by shape in our loose diamond search.

Frequently asked questions

Which diamond shape looks the biggest?

Elongated shapes — oval, marquise and pear — appear largest for a given carat weight, because the weight is spread across a larger surface area.

Are fancy shape diamonds cheaper?

Usually yes. Round brilliants command the highest price per carat, so oval, emerald, princess and cushion shapes often let you buy bigger for the same budget.

What is the most brilliant diamond shape?

Round brilliant, followed closely by princess and cushion cuts, all of which are engineered for high light return.

Is an emerald cut worth it?

If you love the look, yes — it is uniquely elegant. Just buy higher clarity (VS or better), because step cuts make inclusions more visible.
